Identifying and Mitigating Risk in Biopharmaceutical Supply Chains (US)

Americas: June 27 1:00PM Pacific, 4:00PM Eastern

In this 60 minute webinar and Q & A session, our two panelists, Professor Phil Kaminsky from the University of California at Berkeley and Rick Johnston, Ph.D. from Bio-G will present their perspectives on supply chain risks and supply chain risk mitigation in our industry.

Professor Kaminsky will describe a collaborative research effort between UC Berkeley and three major biotechs exploring supply chain inventory optimization for risk mitigation. While this research is in progress, it already suggests a promising methodology for more effectively positioning inventory in the supply chain network to minimize a number of key risks including those from raw materials suppliers, supply chain disruptions and other adverse events, as well as day-to-day operating variability.

Dr Johnston will describe Bio-G's experience working with some of the world's largest biomanufacturers, and outline some of the strategies and best practices that have been developed to understand and mitigate supply chain risks in these organizations. The webinar will also allow a period for Q&A from the industry to discuss future research into this critical area of biopharmaceutical operations.

Professor Phil Kaminsky

Phil Kaminsky is the Chair of the Department of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research at the University of California, Berkeley, where he also serves as director of the CELDi Initiative for Research in Biopharmaceutical Operations, and co-director of the Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology. Before receiving his PhD in Industrial Engineering and Management Sciences, he worked in manufacturing operations at Merck and Co. His research focuses on the analysis and development of robust and efficient techniques for the design and operation of manufacturing and logistics systems and supply chains, with an recent emphasis of biopharmaceutical supply chains. He is a co-author of "Designing and Managing the Supply Chain: Concepts, Strategies and Case Studies" (McGraw-Hill), which won the Book-of-the-Year Award and Outstanding IIE Publication Awards, and "Managing the Supply Chain: the definitive guide for the business professional"(McGraw-Hill).

Rick Johnston, Ph.D.

Dr. Rick Johnston (rick@bio-g.com) is Founder and CEO of Bioproduction Group. In this role he helps biopharmaceutical manufacturers make better decisions in the areas of risk, uncertainty, biomanufacturing capacity, technology transfer, data / process control, and economic analysis. Dr. Johnston is Executive Director of the University of California at Berkeley's CELDi Center for Research in Biopharmaceutical Operations, a center bringing advanced research to biopharmaceutical manufacturing. He is also an Adjunct Professor at Keck Graduate Institute, part of the Claremont Colleges in California where he lectures on biopharmaceutical modeling and technology transfer.
